Some of Christian Eriksen’s teammates broke down in tears

After the pitch emptied, a video board in the stadium relayed updates on Eriksen's condition, and on the match's status, to fans.

Denmark players form a circle around Christian Eriksen as paramedics attend to him on the field.

It said in a statement: "Christian Eriksen is awake and is for further examinations at Rigshospitalet".

Christian Eriksen is "awake" after collapsing during Denmark's Euro 2020 match against Finland.

Denmark dominated the match before and after the traumatic incident, but Finland striker Joel Pohjanpalo headed home the victor on the hour with his side's only attempt of the game.

The midfielder received CPR on the pitch from the medical team who rushed to his assistance when he went down in the closing minutes of the first half.

The traumatic scenes would have been watched by millions around the world and there was an outpouring of support and prayers for the 29-year-old.

UEFA then announced the game had been suspended "due to a medical emergency".

After around 15 minutes Eriksen was stretchered off the field followed by the rest of the Denmark team, while Finland's players also left the pitch. The Finland players and staff are visibly anxious, too.

As the Danes trudged dejectedly off the field, the Finnish players celebrated with their ecstatic fans, but ultimately it was a night when football did not matter with Eriksen being treated at a hospital about one kilometre away.

Sabrina Kvist Jensen, Christian Eriksen's girlfriend, is consoled by Denmark defender and captain Simon Kjaer as Eriksen receives medical treatment. The players came back out onto the field to a huge ovation as they started warming up for a second time.

Amazingly the game will be finished tonight with the match set to resume at 19:30 GMT.
