US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have announced the passing of their "beloved" German Shepherd Champ, who had been with them for 13 years.
In March, he was briefly sent back to the Biden family home in DE after at least one biting incident, and in April the first lady's spokesman announced some "additional training" for the pooch.
Netizens poured out their condolences over the Biden family.
In his younger days, when Joe Biden was vice-president, Champ was "happiest chasing golf balls on the front lawn of the Naval Observatory or racing to catch our grandchildren as they ran around our backyard in Delaware", the Bidens said. Wherever we were, he wanted to be, and everything was instantly better when he was next to us. The Bidens are spending the weekend at their home in Delaware.
The White House insisted the dogs were well behaved and would return to Washington after a brief stint in Delaware.
The president and first lady have another German shepherd named Major, a rescue dog they adopted in 2018. A second biting incident occurred shortly afterwards.
In November, Mr Biden fractured his foot while playing with the lively canine in DE and had to wear a walking boot for a number of weeks. "So that's what I've been obsessed with, getting everybody settled and calm", she said. Major caused Biden to suffer a foot injury in November, after the then-president-elect tripped over the younger dog while they were playing. The First Lady revealed in April that the couple have a female cat "waiting in the wings".
Biden took to Twitter on Saturday (Sunday NZT) to mourn the loss of his "loving companion".
Champ was a puppy during Biden's tenure as vice president under the Obama administration. "We will miss you always".
