US Secretary of State Antony Blinken vowed Tuesday to "rally worldwide support" to aid Gaza following a devastating war there while keeping any assistance out of the hands of its militant Hamas rulers, as he began a regional tour to shore up last week's cease-fire.
Ramallah, May 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah and discussed the situation in the Palestinian territories following the Israel-Hamas ceasefire brokered by Cairo.
The attack came in the the tense aftermath of an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza's militant Hamas rulers that was triggered by protests and clashes in Jerusalem.
US President Joe Biden said his top envoy will meet "with Israeli leaders about our ironclad commitment to Israel's security", as well as seeking to rebuild ties with the Palestinians.
In an interview with CNN over the weekend, Blinken said the administration is now focused on trying to "build something more positive", saying Palestinians and Israelis deserve "equal measures of opportunity, of security, of dignity".
He will then travel on to neighbouring Egypt and Jordan.
On Sunday, Blinken credited Biden's effort leading up to the ceasefire and said the president is still committed to a two-state solution in the region.
The conflict started after clashes in Jerusalem between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters in and around the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Overnight Israeli forces rounded up 43 Palestinians in the West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem, including 27 in the latter, the Palestinian Prisoners Club rights group said.
"There's lots of hard work ahead to restore hope, respect and some trust across the communities", the U.S. top diplomat said.
"But we've seen the alternative and I think that should cause all of us to redouble our efforts to preserve the peace and improve the lives of Israelis and Palestinians alike".
The United States, the official said, is going to be working in partnership with the United Nations and the Palestinian Authority to kind of channel aid there in a manner that does its best to go to the people of Gaza.
On the Israeli side, there were 12 fatalities, including two children, with more than 300 injuries. Some 357 people in Israel have been wounded.
The man was killed during an Israeli arrest raid on the Al-Amara refugee camp near Ramallah, the sources said.
An Israeli soldier and a civilian were stabbed near a light rail station in east Jerusalem on Monday before the assailant was shot and killed by police, who described it as a terrorist attack. Both were in a stable condition and one was identified by the army as a soldier.
Peace talks have stalled since 2014, including over the status of east Jerusalem and Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam and it lies on a hilltop in Jerusalem's Old City that is the holiest place for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount because it was the location of the biblical temples.
The site has seen several outbreaks of Israeli-Palestinian violence over the years and was the epicenter of the 2000 Palestinian intifada, or uprising.
At least 284 Palestinians were killed in Palestinian territories by the occupying forces since April against the backdrop of an Israeli court verdict to evict Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem.
