Deadly Shooting at Railroad Yard in San Jose, California: Shooter Down

Multiple people dead after a shooting at a San Jose rail yard

"We do have reports of an active shooter, it is our light rail maintenance yard", Brandi Childress, VTA spokesperson, says.

The number of casualties from the incident remains unclear, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office spokesman Russell Davis.

"We are in close contact with local law enforcement and monitoring this situation closely", California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a tweet Wednesday.

The facility has been evacuated, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said. Davis said that he did not know the type of weapon used or whether the shooting happened indoors or outdoors. Dozens of patrol cars and fire engines lined the streets near the rail yard.

"Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting", Liccardo tweeted. The victims include Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) employees, he said.

Multiple people died on Wednesday in a shooting that broke out at a railyard in San Jose, California.

Homicides, mostly gun-driven, have surged in the U.S. over the past year.

The shooting occurred at about 6:34 a.m. PT at a VTA control center, which Davis described as a hub that stores multiple VTA trains and a maintenance yard.

President Joe Biden last month branded United States gun violence an "epidemic" and an "international embarrassment".

There were more than 43,000 gun-related deaths in the United States a year ago, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
