State Of Emergency, Evacuations In Florida County Over Wastewater Pond Leak

Florida faces imminent collapse of giant phosphate mine pond

In a letter to the Governor, Fried addresses the current emergency at the Piney Point phosphate plant after the discovery of a breach Friday afternoon.

Florida officials are urging residents in the surrounding areas of a wastewater storage pond to heed evacuation orders ahead of a potential overflow of polluted water. "Teams on the ground are laser-focused on addressing this issue, and I have directed Secretary Valenstein to work with Manatee County and utilize all available resources to form a permanent solution to this longstanding issue", said Desantis.

Gov. Ron DeSantis took an aerial view on Easter Sunday of the situation at an old phosphate facility that's at risk of catastrophic collapse and said the state would hold the owners responsible for any damage to the environment or nearby homes and businesses from any discharge of polluted water.

The entire Piney Point reservoir site, about 20 miles south of Tampa, and surrounding areas has been evacuated.

So far, 316 homes have been evacuated and state authorities have closed a number of roads.

On Sunday, he said the water was "primarily saltwater" from a dredging project mixed with "legacy process water and storm water runoff". "We aren't expecting more than a foot of water on jail property, in the worst case scenario", Warren said.

Crews have been discharging water since the pond began leaking in March.

Hopes said he could not rule out that a full breach could destabilize the walls of the other ponds at the Piney Point site. Now about 22,000 gallons of water are being discharged per minute, and Hopes said he expects the risk of collapse to decrease by Tuesday.

"So if you are in an evacuation area and you have not heeded that, you need to think twice and follow the orders", said Hopes at a news conference with DeSantis.

National conservation group the Center for Biological Diversity also released a statement calling for the US Environmental Protection Agency to intervene.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection says the water "meets water quality standards for marine waters with the exception of pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen and total ammonia nitrogen".

"The pond is basically salt water".

A leak in the Piney Point reservoir was first reported late last month, sparking fears of a complete breach and possible upending of stacks of phosphogypsum, a radioactive waste product of fertilizer manufacturing.
