Joe Biden "Heartbroken" Over Deadly Attack At US Capitol

US Capitol: Two officers injured and building locked down

"Jill and I were heartbroken to learn of the violent attack at a security checkpoint on the U.S. Capitol grounds, which killed Officer William Evans of the U.S. Capitol Police, and left a fellow officer fighting for his life", Biden said in the statement - in which he announced flags at the White House will be lowered to half staff. At such time, the suspect exited the vehicle with a knife in hand.

Pittman says the suspect rammed a barricade near the U.S. Capitol. Green was shot and later died in the hospital, Pittman said during a news briefing. He said there did not appear to be any indication the attack was terrorism-related, but the investigation is ongoing and investigators will continue to see if there's any links to terrorism.

The officials told the Associated Press that the suspect was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Based on the postings to a Facebook page purportedly belonging to Green which was taken down by the company Friday afternoon, he was a self-described admirer of Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam.

US Capitol Police shared a statement about the police officer killed in the attack. Video emerging from the scene showed police and emergency response vehicles responding. He arrived at Camp David at 12:53 pm EST where he is spending the Easter weekend, media said citing spokesperson Jen Psaki. "This has been an extremely hard time for the US Capitol police after the events of January 6, and after the events that have occurred here today", she said.

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) also tweeted, "AJC mourns the death of a U.S. Capitol Police officer today". Fencing that prevented vehicular traffic near that area was recently removed as the Capitol has started to open up after the January 6 riots. Five people died in the assault, including a US Capitol Police officer and one rioter who was shot by a USCP officer. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win. The outer ring of fencing was taken down just this week, although an inner ring of fencing remains around the U.S. Capitol building.

In recent weeks some security around the complex has been loosened, with the number of armed National Guard troops at the Capitol reduced and a security fence that created a broad perimeter around the Capitol complex removed.
