Iowa congressional candidate drops dispute over contested House seat

WASHINGTON DC- SEPTEMBER 07 House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and fellow Democratic members of the House hold a news conference to call on Republicans to fund programs to combat the spread of the Zika virus at the U.S. Capitol

Miller-Meeks was certified the victor, yes, by six votes.

The House Administration Committee had been reviewing Hart's challenge, in which she claimed there were 22 ballots that should have been counted in the November election that would have ultimately delivered her a victory.

This isn't just a legal debate about election processes, it's also a political one that even some Democrats appear uncomfortable with, and it's one that Democrats are losing in the court of public opinion ...

Rita Hart, a former state senator who had run for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District seat, lost her race to Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks by six votes out of almost 400,000 cast.

In recent weeks, Republicans were quick to accuse Democrats of trying to overturn the results of an election just months after all Democrats voted to impeach President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 attack on the Capitol, which they said was inspired by his false claims that his loss to Joe Biden was due to voter fraud. GOP leaders accused Hart of failing to first make an appeal in Iowa state courts and going directly to a Democratically controlled House to get the results overturned.

All 24 counties conducted a recount of results in Iowa's Second Congressional District and the official numbers following the recount show Mariannette Miller-Meeks winning over Rita Hart by six votes, 196,964-196,958.

"Do the Iowans have a voice in this race?" "She is serving the people in Iowa, who elected her".

"After many conversations with people I trust about the future of this contest, I have made the decision to withdraw my contest before the House Committee on Administration", Hart said in a statement Wednesday. Committee members had received initial briefs from Hart and Miller-Meeks's lawyers and paused consideration of dismissing Miller-Meeks's request to dismiss the investigation in an effort to garner more evidence. And that was just not a good look after almost every Democrat within reach of a microphone or keyboard had at some point denounced the Trump campaign for refusing to accept state-certified election results that made Joe Biden president. Hart had been pushing Democrats on the committee to reverse the results and she had secured support from pro-abortion Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"The contest before the Committee on House Administration was proceeding under the Federal Contested Election Act, which requires a contestant", said Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., in a statement.
