The US Capitol is on lockdown as law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting and that an individual rammed a vehicle into two law enforcement officers on April 2. The man exited the vehicle with a knife and ran toward our officers.

"At this time, the suspect has been pronounced dead", Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters. The suspect was shot and died at the hospital.

Two law enforcement officials tell The Associated Press that the driver who rammed a auto into two police officers outside the U.S. Capitol has died after being shot by authorities. One of the officers who was injured was taken by police auto to the hospital; the other was being transported by emergency medical crews, the officials said. The suspect died at a hospital.

A Capitol Police officer was killed Friday after a man rammed a vehicle into two officers at a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol and then emerged wielding a knife, law enforcement officials said.

But CBS News reported that security officials had already warned congressional staffers of a threat before the vehicle ramming.

Fencing that prevented vehicular traffic near that area was recently removed as the Capitol has started to open up after the January riots. But the hallways were mostly empty despite the chaos outside.

Authorities have begun only in the past couple of weeks to remove the outer ring of high, razor-wire-topped fencing erected around the sprawling Capitol complex after the January 6 rampage.

Five people, including a Capitol Police officer, died in the assault inspired by Trump's groundless claims that he had lost the November presidential election due to massive fraud.

Whether the extra fencing around the Capitol was needed after the deadly January 6 insurrection has been a point of controversy in Washington, D.C. And despite Greene's sign, the fencing is under the purview of U.S. Capitol Police, not Pelosi, and was erected by law enforcement and the military.

Evans is the seventh Capitol Police member to die in the line of duty in the department's history, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks deaths of law enforcement.

The officials spoke to AP were not authorised to publicly discuss the pending investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

National Guard troops were mobilised Friday and staff at the huge Capitol complex ordered to stay away from windows and seek cover after alerts went out over the incident shortly after 1pm local time.

The officials say the suspect was critically wounded and was taken into custody.

"Jill and I were heartbroken to learn of the violent attack at a security checkpoint on the US Capitol grounds, which killed Officer William Evans, of the US Capitol Police, and left a fellow officer fighting for his life".

Capitol Police locked down all buildings in the complex and shut down streets in the area.
