Texas Senator Ted Cruz Flies to Cancun as Texans Freeze

Cruz did not immediately confirm or respond to the reports of his jaunt.

"With school cancelled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends", Ted Cruz said, via Rebecca Shabad of NBC News.

Cruz cut his trip short after his travels were reported, stopping briefly in Cancun airport to speak to media on his way out of Mexico.

Photographs of Cruz, R-Texas, at an airport began circulating on social media late Wednesday, with people alleging that the senator had left the state for Cancun amid a major crisis.

"This tweet did not age well at all", one user wrote, along with a photo of Cruz at the airport.

The Lone Star state is in the midst of a crisis in the wake of a powerful storm that started Sunday, creating widespread power outages and burst pipes.

The same person familiar with the trip confirmed to CNN that Cruz is booked on a flight from Cancun back to Houston on Thursday afternoon. Almost 500,000 customers in Texas remained without power Thursday morning.

The Texas senator, who once described Trump as a "pathological liar", championed the-then president's call to block the certification last month of Democrat Joe Biden's election victory. The Texas Democratic Party has made multiple calls for Cruz to resign. "We must restore ethics, competence, and a government that works for the people", the group said in a statement.

"I have no defense", he wrote apologetically. Ted Cruz (R-TX) tweeted with a shrug emoji on Tuesday in response to an article on how he'd mocked California's power outages a year ago.

Cruz has been posting updates on storm conditions from the weather service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency in recent days, and in a tweet Wednesday morning, he encouraged residents to "stay safe" and "continue to follow the warnings and updates provided by state and local officials".

More than 2.5 million Texas homes and businesses are still without power as frigid temperatures have devastated the state's power grid.

Cruz and other Texas Republicans were already under fierce attack for failing to prepare for the catastrophic winter storm and Arctic blast that has virtually brought the nation's second-most-populous state to its knees.
