Mexico approves Russian COVID-19 vaccine

Initial trial finds Russia vaccine 91.6% efficient, EU does not rule out a deal

"I have spoken to the Russian President about this (Sputnik V)". It appears to prevent people who have received the shot from becoming ill with COVID-19. The vaccine was well tolerated and safety data from 1,369 of these older adults found that the most common adverse events were flu-like symptoms and local reaction.

16 countries have already registered the vaccine for emergency use, with half of them intending to produce the vaccine.

Wealthy nations are buying up hundreds of millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses while poorer countries are struggling to secure basic supplies.

In a comment published alongside the Lancet article, professors Ian Jones and Polly Roy reportedly said: "The development of the Sputnik V vaccine has been criticised for unseemly haste, corner cutting, and an absence of transparency".

Final-stage trial results placed Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine on a par with its Western rivals, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced openness to its use in the European Union once it receives the regulatory nod.

The doses use different vectors to carry the "spike protein" portion of the coronavirus and this marks Sputnik V as different from other vaccines.

The study included more than 2,100 people over age 60 and the vaccine appeared to be about 92 percent effective in them.

Despite the early lack of hard data, Russian Federation has been able to sell its Sputnik vaccine to a number of countries, including Argentina, Mexico, India and Hungary, as health officials around the world work to secure life-saving vaccines to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Lancet report, 14,964 participants in the vaccine group and 4,902 in the placebo group were given two jabs 21 days apart.

"Vectors" are vehicles, which can induce a genetic material from another virus into a cell.

The cost of one dose of the vaccine for worldwide markets is less than $10, meaning $20 for two doses.

The lyophilised (or freeze-dried) form of the vaccine can be stored at a temperature of +2 to +8 degrees Celsius, which allows for easy distribution worldwide, including hard-to-reach regions.

Once the use of Sputnik V was authorized, the Russians have the "commitment to send 400,000 doses to Mexico in very few days".

The vaccine is named after the first Soviet space satellite. A tribute to the world's first satellite, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957, Sputnik V recalls a scientific feat for Russian Federation and a historic setback for its rival the United States.

"Despite the earlier misgivings about the way this Russian Sputnik V vaccine was rolled out more widely - ahead of sufficient phase-three trial data - this approach has been justified to some extent now", said clinical virologist Dr Julian Tang (University of Leicester).

But beyond its capital and largest city Moscow, where Mayor Sergei Sobyanin estimated Saturday that some 300,000 people had already been vaccinated, Russian Federation has struggled with rolling out Sputnik V.
