GOP Rep. Uses Dem Standards To Kick Ilhan Omar Off Committee

Senate Republican Leader Blasts Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's “Loony Lies and Conspiracy Theories”

"McCarthy's failure to lead his party effectively hands the keys over to Greene - an anti-Semite, QAnon adherent and 9/11 Truther".

But one of their other top leaders, the number two Republican, exited the meeting when they went on a short break to take votes on the House floor and said he wants his Republicans to deal with this tonight.

He alluded to comments by Maxine Waters, a California lawmaker whom critics accuse of stoking violence after she called in 2018 for members of the Trump administration to be publicly harassed.

The thinking - before it was uncovered she'd harassed a Parkland survivor on Capitol Hill and argued the shooting was a false flag event - was that the education committee would put her under the tutelage of Rep. Virginia Foxx, a tough member with a reputation for running a tight ship and standing up against colleagues who step out of line. "We are, as Republicans, we are a family, we air our differences, we settle it in the conference chamber just like I do with my loving older brothers and sisters, and we come out of it united, '" he said.

Republicans in the U.S. Congress on Wednesday face questions about whether to discipline a pair of strikingly different Representatives Liz Cheney and Marjorie Taylor Greene, decisions that will send a strong signal about the party's future.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and others have boosted pressure this week on McCarthy and the House GOP to act. Last week, 45 of the 50 Senate Republicans voted in favor of a resolution calling the impeachment trial of a former president unconstitutional.

In a statement that didn't use Greene's name, the usually circumspect McConnell called her "loony lies" a "cancer" on the GOP.

"We can either become a fringe party that never wins elections or rebuild the big tent party of Reagan", Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, one of the few elected Republicans who routinely rebuked Trump, said in a written statement.

The handling of Greene and Cheney presented a tricky balancing act for McCarthy.

Still, Democrats' animus against Greene stems at least in part from her long record before taking office of conspiracy mongering on behalf of Trump and gun rights zealots. McCarthy, though, is clearly wary of angering the Greene-Trump base by coming down too hard.

Greene has said her social media posts are managed by several people and that she does not see all of them. Action against either risked angering the GOP's numerous Trump supporters or its more traditional conservative backers. "The whole nature of the Trump phenomenon is there is no appeasement". But he's been criticized by some Republicans, mostly quietly, for relentlessly supporting Trump's fallacious claims of a fraudulent election in November and for not forcefully criticizing Trump for helping provoke the deadly January 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters. They have not yet decided whether they will vote on Liz Cheney's future or not.

But it was unclear Wednesday whether that vote among GOP lawmakers would occur or if McCarthy would somehow delay that showdown. Cheney, when passing by reporters, said that she wouldn't comment on the situation until after the meeting.

Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-Mont., a leader of the effort to oust Cheney, says he has enough support to succeed.

A spokesperson from her office said: "The support from NW Georgia and across the entire country has been overwhelming".
