Dr. Hinshaw shares COVID-19 update for February 17

Coronavirus Canada Updates: COVID-19 cases drop in Alberta as variant concern rises

A majority of the cases are of the strain first identified in the United Kingdom, while seven are of a strain discovered in South Africa.

The Calgary zone saw the biggest dip, down 26 per cent, but it also has the highest number of active cases.

The president of the Alberta Federation of Labour wants a meeting with the premier and provincial labour minister to ensure workplaces with COVID-19 outbreaks are shut down.

Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says they found 277 new cases of COVID-19 found in about 7,500 tests in the past 24 hours.

Dr. Hinshaw says the variant cases are being closely monitored.

The top doctor noted it can take up to two weeks to see the impact of the changes to the restrictions.

Right now it is good news that hospitalizations have continued to decline, as has the reproductive rate (R-value) of the virus, which currently sits at 0.85.

The Enhanced COVID-19 Business Benefit is meant to provide additional support in cases where federal programs fall short.

Alberta is expected to stay the course in terms of easing pandemic-related restrictions as case numbers of COVID-19 continue to be low but, as the number of variant B117 cases track upward, there is no confirmed threshold for what would influence reopening plans.

There were 50 variant cases reported over a four-day period from Monday to Friday.

Overall, half the variant cases diagnosed in the province were linked to travel or the close contact of a traveller.

The province has also seen the number of people fighting coronavirus in hospitals and ICUs drop as well.
