Vancouver Island adds 14 new COVID-19 cases

"Our focus is to ensure we safely deliver the vaccines as quickly as possible to B.C. communities, using all available supply", provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a joint statement issued today, January 12.

To date, 62,294 people have received a COVID-19 vaccine in the province.

The discussion over additional restrictions is to take place as the province reported more than 5,000 deaths from the virus.

Forty-three people are now hospitalized in northern B.C., 16 of whom are in critical care.The number of active cases in Northern Health remains unchanged from yesterday, staying at 497.

Health officials also announced one new outbreak at Mount St. Joseph's Hospital.

Henry adds B.C. will be out of the Pfizer inoculation today, temporarily, but says new shipments of both vaccines will arrive this week.

There are now 185 active cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Island region, which includes the southern Gulf Islands and a portion of B.C.'s central coast.

"Things are different than what they were before the pandemic". Thirteen people in the region have died of the disease and 952 people have fully recovered.

Meanwhile, 7,238 people are under active public health monitoring.

The updated numbers for Monday from Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, and Health Minister Adrian Dix mean total cases climbed to 58,553 while total deaths increased to 1,019.
