Staunchly pro-Israel billionaire Adelson dies aged 87

Sheldon Adelson, Republican kingmaker and casino magnate, has died at 87

US President Donald Trump, right, pats Las Vegas Sands Corporation Chief Executive and Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson on the arm, before speaking at the Israeli American Council National Summit in Hollywood, Florida, December 7, 2019.

'Sheldon was a true American patriot and a giant among men, ' Trump Jr. wrote in a tweet.

Adelson grew up in Boston, working as a newsboy as a child to help support his family before working his way up to becoming one of the most successful resort developers in Vegas.

Forbes estimated his net worth as $35 billion as of Tuesday, a fortune he often used to weigh in on American politics.

'If you do things differently, success will follow you like a shadow, ' he said during a 2014 talk to the gambling industry in Las Vegas.

Under Adelson's leadership, Las Vegas Sands pioneered the integrated resort model that now dominates the Strip, combining luxury hotel-casinos with convention centers. Plans for a Las Vegas memorial service are expected to be announced at a later date, according to the company statement.

Originally a Democrat, Adelson funded several high-profile Republican causes including George W. Bush's re-election campaign in 2004 and Mitt Romney's unsuccessful presidential bid in 2012.

Adelson was considered the nationĀ“s most influential GOP donor over the final years of his life, at times setting records for individual contributions during a given election cycle.

In the United States, Adelson backed pro-Israel Republicans including US President Donald Trump.

Both he and his wife directed nearly $350 million to Republican candidates during the 2018 and 2020 elections, putting them as the nation's top political donors according to the Center for Responsive Politics. He owned properties in Las Vegas, Singapore and Macau.

Adelson took a leave of absence from Sands last week to resume treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
