Sophie Devine creates history after scoring fastest T20 ton

Sparks batswoman Hayley Jensen plays past square leg during her side’s Super Smash clash against

New Zealand's Sophie Devine returned scored the fastest-ever century in the history of women's T20 cricket for Wellington Blaze as they beat the Otago Sparks in the Super Smash.

The feat was all the more remarkable because it was Devine's first match since she ended a fortnight's Covid-19 quarantine four days ago following a stint playing with the Perth Scorchers in Australia's Women's Big Bash League.

Devine's unbeaten 108 runs off 36 balls was not only the fastest Super Smash century, for men or women, but it also helped her Wellington side a massive 10-wicket victory which they stormed past the 129-run target in just 8.4 overs.

To bring up that 100, Devine smashed a full toss for six, but before she could raise her bat in delight, she realised that the ball had hit a young girl in the head.

Immediately after she had sealed the win, Devine made a point of checking on the girl, who was fine. Whenever you have a bit of an extended break away from the game, you get nervous about [whether] you can come back into it.

Apart from the 36-ball blitzkrieg which was her sixth T20 century, she also broke the records of Suzie Bates and Alyssa on the list of most T20 centuries in women's cricket.

Devine added: "I felt I knew where they were trying to bowl so if I could manipulate myself around the crease, I could open up areas of the field. I get a bit over-eager and play some rash shots, so it was nice to stick to some decent cricket shots today and finish the job".

The defending champion Blaze now top the Super Smash table, with four wins from five matches, and with Devine now back and firing, the other teams have a tough challenge ahead if they are to prevent the Wellingtonians from winning a fourth title in a row.
