Shipments of Moderna Covid Vaccine to Michigan Spoil
"We are committed to accelerating vaccine delivery as we work to reach our goal of vaccinating 70% of Michiganders over age 16 as quickly as possible with the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine", Chief Medical Executive, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun said.
Nearly 12,000 Moderna vaccine doses shipped to Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 17, were spoiled because the medication got too cold, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Two other positive COVID-19 cases have been identified among close contacts with the woman.
Recently, several communities across MI had noticed shortages in COVID-19 vaccine doses.
The variant known as B.1.1.7 was located in the woman after she recently traveled to the United Kingdom where the variant was first identified.
"The discovery of this variant in MI is concerning, but not unexpected", said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive and chief deputy for health at MDHHS. "Not all locations receive as much vaccine as they request, which is why we have requested additional vaccine from the federal government".
So far, 300,000 MI residents have had at least one dose of the vaccine, which also protects against the variant.

Viruses constantly change through mutation, and new variants of a virus are expected to occur over time. MDHHS identified the variant in this individual's sample and will continue to conduct whole genome sequencing to quickly identify any variants of interest, including B.1.1.7.
Michigan State already requires weekly testing for all on-campus students and any student coming to campus for any reason, through the COVID-19 Early Detection Program.
