Samsung’s under-display camera tech is ready, but not for smartphones
Recently, Samsung Display posted a video on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, that teased its new OLED panels that feature an under display selfie shooter. However, before you get too excited, you might want to learn that this UDC OLED panel isn't meant for use in smartphones.
In September a year ago, ZTE unveiled the world's first phone with an under-display camera. The accompanying teaser video shows out the laptop and focuses primarily on its display. Samsung Display hasn't shared more details about the tech yet, so it isn't clear if the first notebooks with Samsung's "Blade Bezel" screens will arrive later this year. Strangely, it's not a phone - it's a laptop instead. This laptop makes use of a Samsung OLED display instead of the usual LCDs, and also manages to incorporate an under-display camera. It is claimed to have a 93% screen-to-body ratio.
The Korean company also touts up to 50 percent thinner footprint. As a result, they are significantly lighter as well (up to 30 percent). In this case, it's called the "UPC", which we assume means "Under Panel Camera". Samsung showed off a demo back in 2018, and the company is now ready with its first product with an under-display camera.
An under-display camera seems to be the answer to our never-ending quest for all-screen devices.
In addition to the UPC tech facilitating thinner bezels, the new display is only 1mm thick and weighs just 130g. Of course, ZTE has already launched such a product, the Axon 20 5G.
