Reports of Allergic Reactions to Moderna Vaccine

Yolo County's vaccine supply impacted by hold on Moderna lot

California chose to hold up the shipment of 330,000 doses earlier this week following a cluster of severe allergic reactions at one clinic that was administering the vaccine.

State epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan said Wednesday that the review found "no scientific basis" to continue a halt to using a specific batch of the Moderna vaccine.

The state notified providers on Sunday that they should pause the administration of lot 41L20A of the Moderna vaccine as those possible allergic reactions are investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the federal Food and Drug Administration, Moderna and the state.

The all-clear will benefit counties and others struggling to obtain vaccine supplies to meet unprecedented demand in a state with the second-highest COVID-19 death toll in the country behind NY.

The CDC said that it continues to recommend that the same type of vaccine be administered to patients.

According to CNBC, vaccine research specialists say that the two immunisations are so similar in design that people should not be concerned about the rare instances in which the doses could cross over. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been more than 90% effective in protecting against the coronavirus in clinical trials.

Since the supply of COVID-19 vaccines is now limited, each state has its own plan for deciding which groups of people will be vaccinated first.

On Monday, Yolo County reported that it had received some vaccines from that lot but that none had been administered yet.

As per CDC data, ten cases of anaphylactic shock were recorded among 4,041,396 first doses of the vaccine, which were administered between December 21 and January 10.

"The current reports do not suggest any unexpected or untoward increase in fatalities in frail, elderly individuals or any unusual characteristics of adverse events following administration of BNT162b2", says a statement from the committee, following the review with experts from the European Medicines Agency and Uppsala Monitoring Centre.

Moderna said the lot contained 1,272,200 doses and that about 1 million doses have been distributed to 1,700 vaccination sites in 37 states. The company said it doesn't know how many doses from the lot have been given to people.
