Queensland records no new local cases of coronavirus amid lingering variant concern

Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said Victorian authorities alerted Queensland officers last night that a woman had flown into the state after testing positive to the mutant United Kingdom strain.

"She got tested in hotel quarantine there on December 27 and she was found to be positive", she said.

The woman has since travelled to Maleny on the Sunshine Coast and has been staying with her parents, who are now being isolated and tested.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk urged Queenslanders to stay home.

A Queensland Health spokesman said the risk level for Queensland was extremely low as the woman was at the end of the infectious period.

But Queensland health authorities were not letting their guard down just yet, with Dr Young urging anyone who attended the same locations as the cleaner to still get tested.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said, "We're taking a very cautious approach with this case, now that we know for sure this person has the United Kingdom variant of the virus", she said.

The UK strain is among several emerging variants around the world believed to be more infectious than those which have spread previously.

The UK variant has potentially been active in the community since 2 January but no locally acquired cases have yet been detected.

"We've brought it back for this variant", she said.

Queensland recorded zero new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, the second day of Brisbane's three-day lockdown.

There are extra patrols outside the The Grand Chancellor where a cleaner was found to have contracted the risky United Kingdom variant of COVID-19.

"What we're seeing in the greater Brisbane area is large amounts of compliance and people are doing the right thing", Ms Palaszczuk said.

She was then granted permission to fly into Brisbane on Jetstar flight JQ570 from Melbourne at 11pm.

Of these, 112 have so far tested negative.

Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said police were now handing out masks instead of fines and have given out 360 masks.

Residents also must wear masks outside the home.

He said there were very few people who needed to be turned around for entering the Gold Coast from Brisbane during lockdown.

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said it was unnecessary to rush to the shopping centres to buy food.

She urged people to think of others and to not buy more than what is needed.

Popular public places in Brisbane like South Bank beach were deserted on Saturday as residents obeyed the state's three-day lockdown.

Queensland is on high alert after a cleaner at one of Brisbane's quarantine hotels was initially diagnosed with the variant.

Authorities were forced to act quickly to lockdown the city while contact tracing was underway due to the highly contagious nature of the strain.
