PM Modi likely to address World Economic Forum on Jan 28

Leaders to address issues in virtual Davos meeting

Each year, this is when the world's elite take part in the World Economic Forum (WEF ) in the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos, where the stage is usually set for discussions on what the year ahead will bring and how the world can come together to address the big challenges.

From managing the direct consequences of the COVID-19 crisis to decision-making in areas like health, finance, energy and education, there is now a huge responsibility on world leaders, central bankers and other influential figures to get the recovery right.

There will be 15 special addresses from G20 heads of the state and government and worldwide organisations during the summit, according to WEF.

Other Indian leaders who are to speak at the session include, Trade Minister Piyush Goyal, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Railways, Oil and Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, and Textiles Minister Smriti Irani.

The WEF 2021 will be held virtually from January 26 to 29 at Davos in Switzerland, on the theme "The Great Reset" representing a commitment to jointly and urgently build the foundations of the global economic and social system for a more fair, sustainable and resilient future.

Chinese President Xi Jinping to also address the forum. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also address a session.

On Tuesday, the speakers would include South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, as also International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will speak on Friday, the last day of the summit.

Experts say worldwide cooperation is key to both rebuilding the global economy battered by the pandemic, and to achieving a carbon-neutral society. The Geneva organization is hosting the annual conference online. The participants of the meeting will focus on the issues of technological development, global cooperation, climate change, as well as the coronavirus pandemic.

This is only the second time the WEF's annual meeting will move out of Davos, the first time it happened in 2002 at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel after the twin towers attack.
