Federal officials are seeking information from the public after a manatee was discovered in Florida with a political message written on its back.

Warrington told WTVT, The Fox-owned TV station in Tampa, she had been leading a boat tour on Sunday when she spotted the manatee. Manatee are also protected by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978, which states: "It is unlawful for any person, at any time, intentionally or negligently, to annoy, molest, harass, or disturb any manatee". "I was surprised when I saw it".

The Citrus County Chronicle has reported the attack on the animal and photos circulating online show the manatee with the word etched into its skin. It did, however, appear more skittish than usual, Warrington said.

Officials are asking for anyone in the area or elsewhere who may have pertinent intel on this vandalized manatee to pass their tips to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It is not uncommon to see hundreds of manatees swimming in Homosassa Springs and Crystal River. With it would come a possible $50,000 fine and/or as much as a year in federal prison.

A spokeswoman for the US Fish and Wildlife Service did not immediately return a request for comment.

Manatees in the Sunshine State belong to the West Indian species, scientific name Trichechus manatus latirostris.
