Biden pushes to reopen schools within 100 days

Ontario schools in 7 public health units opening for in-class learning Monday: Lecce

The advice is contained in an updated guidance document released by The Hospital for Sick Children on Thursday.

Ontario's Minister of Education Stephen Lecce made the announcement on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, stating that students in the region served by the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington Health Unit would be among those permitted to go back to school on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021.

The president of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association, which represents trustees, said if parents have questions about whether their school will reopen next week they should reach out to their local board.

The Vancouver school board is increasing social activity for students at its 18 secondary schools.

In it, the experts say that the delay in reopening schools for in-person learning "must be as time-limited as possible" given that it will "inevitably further exacerbate the harms to children and the inequities" already caused by school closures.

In late December, the government announced that all schools would be closed to in-person learning for the first week of the winter term.

"Any surveillance program needs to include a clear communication strategy to all stakeholders that includes the goal of the surveillance", the report states. Some schools may open on Monday, while others will remain closed. But what Catholic teachers and many other Ontarians have been calling for since March is a third option: a real plan that would prevent the spread of COVID-19 in schools and allow students across the province to enjoy the benefits of in-person learning over the long run.

"Students are indicating their levels of engagement are at the same level as they were before (e-learning) or even higher", Fisher said.

Those include students in Grades 1 to 3 are now also required to wear masks on the bus and at school.

The Ministry of Education said it will continue to closely monitor public health trends in regions where schools remain closed in favour of remote learning. "It is therefore imperative that bundled measures of infection prevention and control and a robust testing strategy are in place".
