AOC Wants to ‘Rein In’ Media After Capitol Riots
"I did not know if I was going to make it to the end of that day alive, and not just in a general sense but also in a very, very specific sense", the congresswoman said during the hour-long live stream, calling the encounter during the January 6 riot at the Capitol "traumatizing".
Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took to Instagram on Tuesday and suggested several members of Congress should hold a discussion to help "rein in" the media environment to avoid "spew [ing] disinformation and misinformation" moving forward.
"It's one thing to have differing opinions", the progressive congresswoman continued, "But it's another thing entirely to just say things that are false". "Many of us merely narrowly escaped death". "There were members of Capitol Police, who were quite heroic ... there were also black and brown officers that were confronting white supremacists and putting themselves, not just to protect members, but they put themselves in harm's way".
In a lengthy Instagram Live video Tuesday night, Ocasio-Cortez said that she had a "very close encounter", during which she thought she "was going to die".
Ocasio-Cortez has also expressed support for Trump's impeachment and removal from office following the attack on the Capitol, which some lawmakers from both parties have in part blamed on the president's rhetoric surrounding the election and his unfounded claims of voter fraud. This was never about safety for them, it was always a slogan because if they actually cared about rule of law they would speak up when people break the law. Despite her absence, she still voted through a proxy.
Occasio-Cortez's claims echo those made by Stacey Abrams and other activists on the left who charge that election security laws supported by Republicans, like voter ID, are intentionally created to prevent minorities from voting. Frankly, he is a traitor to our country, a traitor to the United States and I don't think there's another way you can put it.
The congresswoman also touched on her own healing in the wake of the siege.
She had strong condemnation for Trump for inciting the riots, as well as members of his administration who have not invoked the 25th Amendment to remove him from office, as well as those who voted to overturn the election results. His refusal paved the way for the House to vote Wednesday to impeach Trump, making him the first president in USA history to be impeached twice. "I think as a outcome it took me a long, long, long, long time to assess what happened ... it really took me 10 years to process". She didn't elaborate on the details, but cited security concerns. I did not think, I did not know if I was going to make it to the end of that day alive.
