Strawberry Moon marks start of 'eclipse season' for astronomy fans

There will be a Strawberry Full Moon on Friday, June 5, 2020.

There was also a slight lunar eclipse as Earth begins what's called an "Eclipse Season"! During a penumbral eclipse such as Friday's, however, the Moon just nicks the outer shadow of the Earth. There are three different types of Solar Eclipse, Total Solar Eclipse, Partial Solar Eclipse, and Annular Solar Eclipse. In total, the Earth blocks all the light which lets it hard to see the moon.

This month's full moon is called the "Strawberry Moon" in North America because it served as a signal to early tribal colonies that wild strawberries were ripened and ready for harvesting.

The Lunar Eclipse will start at 11:15 pm on June 5 and will remain till 2:34 am on June 6. At this point, the full moon will darken to quite an extent and also dramatically redden.

What is the Strawberry Moon Eclipse? If you didn't catch it live, you can watch the replay and enjoy an image of the strawberry moon shared by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, the founder of the Virtual Telescope project.

Nigel Riley photographed the Strawberry Full Moon rising over the lighthouses last night at Kalk Bay harbour.

"When the moon is low on the horizon, it allows you to capture the view with objects in the foreground, making the moon appear bigger", Jones explained.

Lunar eclipses occur when Earth's shadow blocks the Sun's light.

Strawberries are native to North America, and before the 1600s Europe had never heard of the fruit.

The partial penumbral eclipse of the moon will occur on Friday afternoon at 3:12 p.m. Maximum eclipse occurs at 19:26 UT, with the Moon 59 percent immersed in the umbral shadow of the Earth.

This will be followed by a ring eclipse on June 21, a lunar eclipse on July 5, a fourth lunar eclipse on November 30, and finally a total solar eclipse on December 14. South of Pakistan and northern India and China too will be able to see the eclipse. But this is a special event, which leads to three eclipses.
