Shepard Bushiri Released By Malawi Court, Remains Wanted In South Africa

Malawi detains fugitive pastor his wife

Bushiri, a self-proclaimed prophet known for performing "miracles" and an opulent lifestyle, skipped to Malawi last week in breach of strict bail conditions imposed by a South African court.

This follows Bushiri and his wife's re-arrest after they jumped bail in South Africa where they are wanted to face $6.6m fraud allegations.

South Africa says it has commenced extradiction processes against the preacher and his wife. They were arrested in Malawi on Wednesday following an arrest warrant issued by Interpol.

"As a member of Interpol, Malawian police authorities now have an obligation to hand the two fugitives over to the worldwide agency and South African authorities", said DA MP Angel Khanyile.

Lawyers who successfully secured the re-run of 2019 Malawi Presidential Elections that saw President Lazarus Chakwera win have dumped fugitive Shepherd Bushiri and his alleged partner in crime, Mary Bushiri.

The NPA welcomed a decision by the Pretoria Magistrates Court to have the couple's multi-million-rand mansion forfeited to the State after they failed to appear for their corruption trial. Bushiri made his wealth through donations from followers of his Enlightened Christian Gathering church in Pretoria.

South Africa wants the two to be extradited to the Rainbow Nation to answer charges against them.

Once Chakwera was back in Lilongwe, Malawian officials issued a statement protesting at the South African treatment of their president.

Ramaphosa said he was expecting a "detailed report on the whole Bushiri saga ... then we'll see what action needs to be taken because it should never have happened the way it did".

The mogul has huge investments in the mining, telecommunications and luxury sectors. "So, we launched a manhunt yesterday, and we are sure that the couple got wind of the news that police are looking for them, and now we have them in our custody".
