Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrate 73rd anniversary

Windsor Castle completely destroyed after fire broke out in 1992

A photograph of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh has been released to mark their 73rd wedding anniversary.

"This new image has been released to mark the 73rd wedding anniversary of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh tomorrow", the royal family captioned the picture on Instagram.

On their golden wedding anniversary, she paid very personal tribute to Prince Philip in a speech at the Guildhall in London, in which she said: "He is someone who doesn't take easily to compliments, but he has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years". Next to him on the couch at Windsor Castle sits the Queen, wearing a pastel dress.

The joy that the thoughtful gift brought them was clear to see.

Her brooches are often imbued with special meaning - when she addressed the nation at the height of the first lockdown in April, promising that "we will meet again", she wore a brooch fashioned from diamond and turquoise - a stone prized for its protective and talismanic properties. She was given the jewellery in 1946 by Sir James Laing & Sons Limited and the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company Limited when she launched the British Princess oil tanker.

The Queen, 94, was a 21-year-old princess when she married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947. The couple are parents to four children, Prince Charles, 72, Princess Anne, 70, Prince Andrew, 60, and Prince Edward, 56. She has been queen since 1952, ruling longer than any other British monarch.

Due to the second Covid-19 lockdown across England, the royal pair will be celebrating in isolation at Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip, on the other hand, has retired from public duties.
