PM's Kabul visit reaffirms Pakistan's stance of peaceful Afghanistan: Qureshi

Yahoo News

It may be recalled that on September 25 of this year, President Ghani had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and invited him to visit Kabul.

Amid rising Taliban violence and stalled peace negotiations between the Afghan government and the hardline Islamic outfit, Pakistan PM visited Kabul, and said he "will do everything to restore peace in the war-torn country". Mr Dawood's visit led to important breakthroughs for commencement of negotiations on the Preferential Trade Agreement, progress in revision of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity, Customs Assistance Agreement and understanding to have memorandums of understanding for cooperation between central banks of the two countries.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari's 2009 visit cost the national exchequer $44,000.

"This visit gave a message that we stick to our stance". And now both the neighbouring countries are ahead with similar security, economic, civic and administrative issues. India said that the accountability of those who harbored terrorists should be fixed and the Security Council should speak clearly against such forces.

"As a close neighbor of Afghanistan, China sincerely hopes that the parties involved could, through peace talks, bridge differences, lay down their arms, and find an effective political solution that will bring peace, stability and development to Afghanistan at an early date", he said. These, he had said, would help the people affected by violence. Whether these are sufficient to help the Afghan forces, which are believed to be under-trained and under-equipped to ward off the Taliban is uncertain.

However, many Afghans still view Pakistan with deep mistrust, blaming it for the resurgence of the Taliban and for giving the insurgents a safe haven from which to operate.

But Friday's meeting was held online and broadcast by the UN.

Under an earlier deal between the US and the Taliban that outlined a gradual pullout, the remaining USA forces were to leave Afghanistan by next April.

In his remarks at the Arria Format Meeting at UNSC, Tirumurti pointed out the report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team under the Al-Qaeda/Da'esh Sanctions Committee which has also highlighted the presence of foreign fighters in Afghanistan.

No one is doubtful about sincerity of Prime Minister Imran Khan for having cordial and friendly terms with neighbouring Afghanistan but it is a fact that certain internal state organs and foreign friends are thinking on different lines. Establishing bilateral ties between the two has been hard because of Afghanistan's support to Pashtuns and Balochs. "How long should we give sacrifices? what type of peace is this?" asked Farzad Majidpoor, a Kabul resident.
