One million people receive experimental Chinese COVID-19 vaccine

Oxford and Astra Zeneca vaccine achieved 99 percent immunity in phase 2

He had emphasised that vaccination of Russians against coronavirus was the top priority and is more important than the export of vaccines.

Both low and standard doses of the vaccine triggered responses in both parts of the immune system.

The researchers from The University of Oxford and AstraZeneca began working on the vaccine in January and they started their human clinical trials in April. The other group was given a placebo - a shot with an inactive substance.

This is China's first phase-3 efficacy study for a Recombinant subunit COVID-19 vaccine candidate, Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutical, said in a statement on Thursday. It uses a modified cold virus called adenovirus, and it carries a little piece of the coronavirus into the body to train the immune system to recognize and attack it. The human cells will then create proteins to develop antibodies against the coronavirus.

"Phase 3, which is now underway, shows that the effectiveness is very, very high", Elena Baibarina, who heads Russian Health Ministry's department for medical help to children, told Sputnik News on Friday.

The Oxford study was briefly suspended in September because of an unexplained illness in a volunteer.

Global trials are expected to begin in Uzbekistan late this month, followed by trials in Indonesia, Pakistan and Ecuador.

The Nepali government has sent requests to several countries that are developing Covid-19 vaccines seeking their early availability after they are proven to be effective.

The companies, Moderna and Pfizer, have said they will seek emergency use authorization for their vaccines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

India is watching the progress of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, but availability and supply could be an issue with a population as large as India's, the head of a committee advising the prime minister said this week. "We hope that this means our vaccine will help to protect some of the most vulnerable people in society, but further research will be needed before we can be sure", she said in the release.
