New Rules to Allow Canadians to Avoid Quarantine when Traveling to Hawaii

Negative virus test required for Hawaii travelers

Previously, passengers whose test had not yet been confirmed would only have to quarantine until they received their negative result.

"We're taking this added safety precaution now in response to the dramatically increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the continental United States and around the world".

Gov. Ige also announced that beginning in mid-December, travelers flying from Canada to Hawaiʻi may bypass the state's mandatory 14-day quarantine if they take a COVID-19 test from labs identified by Air Canada and WestJet.

If you're looking at this from out there, before you travel, get your test result before you depart for Hawaii and upload it. If test results are not available before boarding the final leg of their trip, the traveller must quarantine for 14 days or the length of their stay, whichever one is shorter. "Hawaii has the most rigorous pre-travel testing program in the United States, and we're grateful to Air Canada and WestJet for making it available to their passengers".

Since the pandemic began, visitors have had the option of bypassing testing and quarantining for 14 days upon arrival.

Lt. Governor Green noted that after one month of surveillance testing, there were only 27 positive cases out of 17,720 post-travel tests administered. "We look forward to welcoming our friends and family from Canada and appreciate the efforts of WestJet and Air Canada to make the process as safe and smooth as possible".

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino also applauded the decision.

"We are aware that it would have some impact in the numbers, but we do believe that the pre-travel testing program is working, that all, many of our trusted partners are able to deliver results back to those traveling in a timely way", the governor explained. "We have long advocated for safe and science-based strategies over blanket quarantines to enable a safe and secure resumption of air travel".

Earlier this week, WestJet announced its December schedule including twice-weekly, nonstop Dreamliner service between Calgary and Honolulu, and Calgary and Maui.

Also starting on Tuesday, passengers seeking a quarantine waiver must have the results of their test before boarding their flight. Alberta residents may be eligible to participate in the joint Government of Canada and Government of Alberta pilot project to test arriving residents as part of reducing quarantine. Canada's mandatory 14-day quarantine for all passengers arriving in or returning to Canada was last extended on November 2 and is set to expire on November 30. Travel restrictions on U.S.travel to Canada remain in place.
