A man in his 50s has died after being attacked by a shark off Cable Beach, at Broome, on Western Australia's north coast.

The man was recovered from the water this morning and treated by local police before St John Ambulance officers arrived.

"Police can confirm that tragically the man has died as a result of his injuries", he said.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said they were investigating a possible attack at Cable Beach around 8:45am this morning.

Police said later that they shot at the shark, which lingered close to the shore, for nearly half an hour after the attack.

The man was pulled from the water and given medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

"It's a tragic incident, very unexpected, a person going out to have a bit of fun in the water", Pears said.

The beach has been closed by local rangers.

However, shark attacks are rare around Cable Beach, near the town of Broome.

The most recent previous attack in Esperance, Western Australia, occurred on 9 October when a surfer was dragged from his board by a shark, according to his companions.

Despite a three-day search, his body was never found.
