Jazz secure Donovan Mitchell; now they must build around him

Report Donovan Mitchell Jazz agree to five-year max extension Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell

Los Angeles Lakers forward Jared Dudley passed along his congratulations to Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell after Mitchell agreed to a huge contract extension with the Jazz.

Michell's extension comes with a guaranteed $163 million, but the total value could rise to $195 million if he meets All-NBA criteria this season, Wojnarowski adds.

Mitchell has averaged 27.3 points in 23 career playoff games, including 36.3 points in last season's seven-game, first-round loss to the Denver Nuggets, when he joined Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson as the only players in National Basketball Association history to have a pair of 50-plus-point games in a playoff series.

ESPN reports Mitchell, 24, will sign the designated rookie max extension. Those numbers helped Mitchell earn the first All-Star selection of his career.

Mitchell's new contract is worth $195 million over five years, making him one of the league's highest-paid players. Coming out of college, he was a talented scorer and he's evolved his game even further in his first three seasons in the league. For the supermax to kick in, Mitchell will need to make one of the three All-NBA teams over the life of the contract, something his play is on track to accomplish.
