Ireland Boss' Future Reportedly Under Threat Over 'Anti-English' Video

FAI investigate

Ireland soccer manager Stephen Kenny will be interviewed by FAI chiefs over a video featuring moments from Anglo-Irish history which was shown to players ahead of last week's friendly against England.

They report that the video contained "overtly political content" and it left some members of the FAI staff "upset" and "stunned" The video was shown in the team's hotel on the afternoon of the match, which England won 3-0.

Kenny hasn't had a good start to life as Ireland boss since taking over from Mick McCarthy earlier this year, failing to win any of their eight games and losing in the Euro 2020 qualifier on penalties to Slovakia.

On Thursday evening, it emerged that the FAI had launched an investigation into a short video that was played for the Ireland team in the lead up to the 3-0 loss at Wembley.

It is alleged the video may have "overstepped" the line when it comes to political correctness and missed the tone of the current side, especially with certain players within the squad having English roots.

Some players and staff are understood to have privately complained about the video, the Mail say, with one source describing it as "close to the line".

"Following this development, the FAI decided it was appropriate to look into the matter".

"In fairness what goes on in a dressing room is sacrosanct but given the sensitivity that has historically surrounded this fixture it would be helpful for the FAI to bring clarity to the story and not cause further bad blood", he said.

Kenny, appointed as senior manager in April, has endured a hard spell as coach of the senior side.
