Germany: Teacher arrested on suspicion of murder and cannibalism

A German police dog digs in a park with his handler holding a torch

A 41-year-old high school teacher in Berlin, Germany, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday, in connection to the discovery of human remains in the north of the city earlier this month.

The man was arrested in connection with the disappearance of a 44-year-old man in Berlin in September, with prosecutors saying that they are "investigating at full speed to shed light on the sexual murder with suspicion of a cannibalistic background".

"The suspect had an interest in cannibalism", said Berlin prosecutors' office spokesman Martin Steltner to news agency The Associated Press.

The man was detained at his home close to the site where the 44-year-old victim's bones were found earlier this month on the northern edge of the capital.

"We then found bones about 15 to 20 minutes by vehicle from the suspect's apartment, and we found body parts that clearly belong to the missing person", he said.

Investigators reportedly found a large fridge in his cellar, but it was empty. "He searched online for the topic".

On November 8 by-passers found bones that were turned out to be remains of the missing man in Pankow district.

However, authorities had previously stated that he was known to use dating apps to meet male and female partners.

But Steltner said Friday that this case is different in that there are "no indications that the victim consented in any way".

In another case that shocked Germany, Armin Meiwes, nicknamed the "cannibal of Rotenburg", was sentenced to life in prison in 2006.

Brandes, an IT manager, had posted an advert for someone to "obliterate his life and leave no trace".

Judges also rejected the defence's argument that the act was similar to euthanasia, which is illegal but would have carried a shorter sentence.

The case recalls that of Detlev Guenzel, a German ex-police officer convicted of murdering a willing victim he met on a website for cannibalism fetishists and chopping him up in an S&M chamber. Prosecutors said the victim had fantasised about being eaten, but there was no evidence the suspect actually did so.
