Fitbit Announces Major Software Update with Google Assistant, New Features

Fitbit's latest smartwatches have received new features with Fitbit OS 5.1

It will now have support for Alexa as well. To provide customers more choices, Fitbit OS 5.1 is adding support for Google Assistant so that users can control their smart home devices, get updated on the news and weather, or book a restaurant or service appointments and this is even for those who don't have a Wear OS smartwatch. We suspect additional Fitbit devices will eventually support Google's voice assistant, considering Google is buying Fitbit.

The update to OS 5.1 comes just a month after its last software update, which activated the built-in electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) on the Fitbit Sense in the U.S., some European countries and Hong Kong. Fitbit has started issuing Fitbit OS 5.1 to the Sense and Versa 3 in the USA.

The new Fitbit OS 5.1 software update is available today through the mobile companion app. However, it may change with future Fitbit devices as the software giant is now in the process of buying Fitbit.

The watches' messaging and calling functionality is also being enhanced with the latest update. Previously, both the Fitbit Versa 3 and Sense would simply display the responses on the screen. In fact, the bulk of these activities could only be achieved with your phone, as there is very little Google Assistant functionality in the watch itself- all voice prompts are routed via Bluetooth back to the phone for processing. Notably, users would be able to choose between the primary voice assistant following the update. The Fitbit Versa 3 and Sense can now answer calls directly when a phone is nearby, whereas before they could accept or reject calls, but you still had to speak into your phone. The most important innovation is the ability to now take pulse oximetry readings when you're sleeping without the use of a dedicated clock face.
