Coronavirus: Fewer than 5 cases again in Galway

Thurston County reported 34 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, and announced the death of a man in his 90s and a man in his 70s. The remaining 80 cases are spread across 18 other counties.

The latest infections mean that the pandemic has seen a total of 70,461 confirmed cases, with 344 recorded yesterday.

As of 2pm today 283 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 33 are in ICU.

But Carlow and Kilkenny have both registered less that five cases in the past 24 hours.

Sixty-nine percent of today's new cases are under the age of 45 and the median age is 32.

The national incidence rate is 113.3 - slightly higher than last night.

The figures come as the country holds its breath ahead of an upcoming Government announcement on the restrictions set to be in place over the Christmas period.

There has been a total of 2,018 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland.

In Northern Ireland, 12 further deaths linked to coronavirus have been reported.

However, all non-essential retail will have to close again next Friday for a further two weeks.
