Australia 'will always be Australia,' PM responds to China grievances

Amid China's Ever Growing Threat, Japan, Australia Likely To Ink Defense Pact

Australia is refusing to apologise to China after being accused of poisoning bilateral relations in an incendiary diplomatic briefing.

"The ball is very much in China's court to be willing to sit down and have that proper dialogue", Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said on Wednesday.

The pact holds extreme importance to counter Chinese militarization of the South China Sea, its maneuvers around disputed islands in the East China Sea, and Beijing's growing influence over Pacific island nations further east.

It believes Australia's push for an independent inquiry into the COVID-19 outbreak was justified, and it has every right to publicly state its concerns about human rights abuses in China.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison dismissed criticism that Australia acted at the behest of the U.S. in crafting foreign policy.

The Australian side blatantly violated the basic norms of global relations, repeatedly spoke and acted out of turn on issues concerning China's core interests like Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Taiwan, Zhao said, adding that all this amounted to gross interference in China's internal affairs and seriously hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.

The Morrison government continues to justify its positions on its disagreements with China and believes Beijing has repeatedly misinterpreted Australia's position on those matters, believing the latest list of complaints is unreasonable.

The leaders of Japan and Australia said Tuesday they will bolster bilateral defense cooperation, agreeing in principle on a "landmark" pact to facilitate joint exercises as the key US allies in Asia seek to counter China's growing influence.

In the run up to the dossier's release, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian noted "The Australian side should reflect on this [the state of Australia-China relations] seriously, rather than shirking the blame and deflecting responsibility", the SMH reports.

The minister said Australia had reached out at every possible level to make contact with Chinese authorities.

"To what extent the rest members of the alliance will coordinate with the U.S.' suppression on China will be in part determined by the new administrations' specific policies", the paper added. "We're just going to keep being ourselves". "It is mutually advantageous for both of us".

Australian government ministers have recently said they want to improve communication with Beijing, but China's foreign ministry has said Australia needs to "take concrete actions to correct their mistakes".
