Apple Reaches $113 Million Settlement Over Slowed-Down iPhones

While Apple didn't specify specifically what was going on, the company did acknowledge in its update notes that the lock screen may "become unresponsive on iPhone 12 Mini".

The so-called "batterygate" scandal dates back to 2017 when customers began noticing that their devices were slowing down after downloading new versions of Apple's software.

The lawsuit alleged that iPhone 6 and 7 generation phones were equipped with batteries that were susceptible to unexpected power-offs when those batteries could not provide sufficient voltage to support phone processing performance.

This new fine was announced on Thursday morning in Arizona, the culmination of a lawsuit brought by more than 30 USA states.


The French court also stated that the company should have informed iPhone users that their models were being slowed down through a new software update.

In a statement, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich said that he's committed to preventing tech companies from manipulating consumers. "I'm committed to holding these goliath technology companies accountable when they hide important information from users". As part of Wednesday's settlement, Apple agreed to "maintain easily accessible and prominent" webpages with information on the company's battery and other issues, including shutdowns and device performance.

The settlement may sound enormous, but it's worth bearing in mind that Apple boasts an annual revenue of $275 billion - approximately €232 billion.

However, Apple also apologised for not communicating to users properly and offered affected customers cut-price iPhone battery replacements.
