According to local Fox affiliate KTUV, the church was part of an effort to provide shelter for the homeless. "Unhoused individuals were brought into the church to get them out of the cold". San Jose's homeless population has increased by 42 percent to 6,172, according to January's 2020 homeless census, mandated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and taken every two years.
The police said in a tweet that "this is a very active scene" and urged people to avoid the area amid an ongoing operation. Although horrified by this tragic incident, Grace Baptist Church will continue to help those in need.
