Twitter reverses policy on hacked content after Hunter Biden backlash

Twitter Changes Hacked Content Rules Over New York Post’s Hunter Biden Story

Among the revelations contained in the bombshell Robert Hunter Biden emails obtained by the New York Post are details on precisely how the son of former Vice President Joe Biden enriched himself by arranging meetings between his family and influential worldwide figures, including those with ties to the government of Communist China. The shop owner had reportedly copied the hard drive and handed it over to federal authorities.

The Biden campaign said the meeting never occurred.

The New York Post has highlighted a number of tweets from twitter employees that would justify a ban from the platform, based on Twitter's own policies.

Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to the Burisma board, thanked Hunter Biden for the "opportunity" to meet his father in an email sent on April 17, 2015. The FBI probed whether the purported emails are part of a Russian disinformation campaign, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey said in a tweet Friday morning that "straight blocking of URLs was wrong" and suggested that Twitter instead should have applied tools like labels. A spokesperson for the company said the articles would still be blocked for "violating the rules on private personal information". "Our goal is to attempt to add context, and now we have capabilities to do that".

"We will no longer remove hacked content unless it is directly shared by hackers or those acting in concert with them", Gadde said in a series of tweets.

On Thursday night, Twitter changed its hacked materials policy, saying it would no longer block the distribution of hacked material unless the hacker was circulating it. However, it didn't ready clients regarding why they couldn't share the connection until some other time.

"Whereas I'll deliberately not hyperlink to the New York Submit, I need be clear that this story is eligible to be truth checked by Fb's third-party truth checking companions", Fb spokesman Andy Stone tweeted Wednesday.

"Over the last 24 hours, we've received significant feedback (from critical to supportive) about how we enforced our Hacked Materials Policy yesterday", wrote Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's "Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead".
