Trump aide says ‘we’re not going to control the pandemic’

Mark Meadows Covid-19

"We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics, and other mitigations". He said in a statement that Meadows was effectively waving "the white flag of defeat" and "a candid acknowledgement of what President Trump's strategy has clearly been from the beginning of this crisis".

In an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes programme, which aired on Sunday, Mr Biden said that President Trump still had a chance of winning the election even though he is trailing him by an average of eight points in national polls.

Pence himself tested negative, his office said.

We all know that the Trump administration is doing nothing to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meadows says "sharing personal information is not something that we should do, not something that we do actually do, unless it's the vice-president or the president, or someone that's very close to them where there is people in harm's way".

Speaking to the BBC on Sunday, Fauci said it was not the case the USA was "turning the corner" on COVID-19, as claimed by Trump, and that while people did not want a return to full lockdowns some actions to mitigate the spread should be implemented. "We're going to defeat the virus; we're not going to control it", Meadows said.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 are continuing to surge in the United States as more than 83,000 new infections were recorded on both Friday and Saturday - the highest daily totals since the pandemic started.

His remarks come as coronavirus cases surge in the U.S., nine days before the country's presidential election.

Joe Biden had no public events scheduled for Sunday. "He is wearing a mask as it relates to this particular thing because the doctors have advised him to do that".

"We have made tremendous progress with the China Virus, but the Fake News refuses to talk about it this close to the Election", the president tweeted.

Addressing supporters in New Hampshire on Sunday, President Trump repeated his claim that the U.S. was turning a corner with the pandemic. The guidelines require that essential workers exposed to someone with the coronavirus closely monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and wear a mask whenever around other people. "He's not just campaigning, he's working", Meadows said.

Pence, who is known to rarely wear a mask while flying on Air Force Two, traveled on Saturday to Florida for campaign rallies in Lakeland and Tallahassee.

"It's long past time for President Trump and his administration to listen to the scientists, take action, and finally take seriously the threat of a virus that's costing thousands of lives each week, shuttering our schools, and forcing millions of Americans out of work", Biden said. Pence will campaign in Minnesota that day and return to North Carolina on Tuesday. "That is encouraging wearing a mask and encouraging social distancing".

He said that Pence would continue with travel plans because he is "essential personnel". "I do think we have some control", the South Dakota Republican said in response to Meadows' Sunday comments.
