Teofimo Lopez upsets Vasiliy Lomachenko to become youngest four-belt champion

Vasiliy Lomachenko Vs Teofimo Lopez Action20

Teofimo Lopez beat Vasyl Lomachenko via unanimous decision to become the undisputed lightweight division's first champion. The judges' scorecards look as the following: 116-112, 119-109, 117-111.

Lopez made sure of victory in the 12th by showing more desire and landing the cleaner shots to win it. Lomachenko landed only 31 punches in the first 7 rounds.

Lomachenko said he believed he won the fight and disagreed with the scoring decision during a post-bout interview, according to boxing insider Dan Rafael.

Lopez defended his 135-pound IBF lightweight title and seized the WBC, WBO and WBA belts from Ukraine's Lomachenko who suffered his first loss in six years.

Lomachenko's professional record drops to 14-2, which doesn't account for his dominant amateur career.

"I am a fighter, I had to dig-in deep".

Lomachenko fired back verbal barbs of his own in the weeks leading to the fight, suggesting Lopez's bluster would lead to his undoing once the two stepped into the ring for one of the more anticipated showdowns in recent memory.

Lopez received a nasty cut over the right eye from an accidental head butt in the final round but was able to continue. "I knew it was going to take him a long time to catch up". That's what a true champion does. I thank God first because I couldn't do it without him.

"My son was the better man", Lopez Sr said with a championship belt slung over his left shoulder.

Lopez' victory has become the latest victor for Mayweather after his stunning victory in Las Vegas.

Lopez rocks Lomachenko with an uppercut.

The contract for the fight promoted by Top Rank and broadcast on ESPN did not include a rematch clause, per Lomachenko's terms as the three-belt champion, thus leaving the two-time Olympic gold medalist at the mercy of Lopez and his team as to whether they would face one another again. But he came out strong and beat Lomachenko to the punch.

Lomachenko, who lost only once in almost 400 amateur fights and had only one loss as a pro, thought he did better than the scorecards indicated.

Haney issued a challenge to Lopez via his Twitter page shortly after the fight, as did Ryan Garcia, another standout in the lightweight division.

Even though Lopez dominated the fight, the score of 119-109 from judge Julie Lederman (which means that Loma only won 1 round), seems totally excessive.
