Taiwan, China trade accusations after staffers fight in Fiji

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has approved tech firms including Taiwan’s Foxconn Wistron and Pegatron to set up smartphone production plants in the South Asian nation

Talking about how can the relationship between the two countries be further improved, he said, "If the Indian government is interested in improving the economic and trade relations with Taiwan even further, an FTA or similar to FTA type of arrangement between Taiwan and India will certainly improve our economic relations", hinting towards the world's economic distancing from China.

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry condemned what it called "provocative wolf warrior diplomacy" as a violation of rule of law and civilized behavior, a reference to China's so-called "wolf warriors" - diplomats who have taken an increasingly assertive stance on social media in advocating for Beijing's policies.

Taiwan is recognized as an independent government by only 15 nations, a lot of them small and poor but its elected government has extensive commercial and informal ties with many nations.

Fiji's foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

There was no immediate comment from Beijing.

On the question of China's preparation for a possible military invasion on Taiwan, Taiwan's Foreign Minister told WION that China is not hiding its intention, adding "we are also beefing our military capabilities and garnering support from several countries". Trade between them grew 18% to $7.2 billion in 2019.

The confrontation broke out when Taiwanese at the gathering tried to stop Chinese diplomats from taking photos of guests at the reception, according to a statement from Taiwan's Foreign Ministry.

It was in the 1990s that China had given autonomy to Taiwan under "one country two system" system.

Earlier in the month, Chinese jets incarnated repeatedly in Taiwan's airspace, as the Tsai Ing-wen's government widely criticized this act that happened close to the National Day.

For Beijing, the Taiwan Office in Fiji is guilty of displaying a "self-styled" national flag, also on a cake, and of provoking Chinese agents who went to the place of the celebrations to "fulfill their official duties". Taiwan had refused the offer but eased movement and investment in China and also declared that war was over with China.

Indian public sentiment toward China has fallen in the wake of deadly border clashes between the two neighbors starting in May. India has seen more than 7.5 million infections and 115,000 deaths from Covid-19.

That displeasure with China, as well as Taiwan's successful handling of the pandemic, is translating into a soft power opportunity for Tsai. Taiwan's 24 million have seen fewer than 600 infections and only seven deaths.

"We have to think about the way for democracies, for like-minded countries, to work further together", Taiwan foreign minister Joseph Wu said during an interview last week on the television network India Today.

Taiwan's defence depends on whether the USA would come to its assistance.

"Going forward, we will continue to hold national day receptions", she said. All three tweets received more than 40,000 likes each and thousands of friendly messages from Indian accounts.

The incident comes as China steps up aggressions against Taiwan, an independent island over which China claims sovereignty.
