Scientists find first ‘murder hornet’ nest in U.S.

Deadly Murder Hornets Nest Found In Washington State, Invading U.S.

The Washington State Dept. of Agriculture says they've located an Asian giant hornet nest on a private property in Blaine. and as you can see, the murder hornets set up shop inside a tree.

Scientists for the department have been searching for nests since the first Asian giant hornets were caught earlier this year.

In its statement Friday, the department said it discovered the nest after four live hornets were found in two separate traps on October 21 and October 22.

"Using a new type of trap, WSDA researchers tagged several captured hornets with radio trackers, which they used to lead them to the nest", CNN reported. These murder hornets usually nest in the ground, but sometimes they pick a dead tree for their home base.

The property owner has given permission for agency staff to eradicate the nest and remove the tree, if necessary.

It was first spotted in Washington in December 2019, and since then, the state's department of agriculture has been on the hunt for the invasive species.

The world's largest hornet at 2 inches (5 centimeters) long, the invasive insects can decimate entire hives of honeybees and deliver painful stings to people. Bad weather delayed plans to destroy the nest Friday. Over just three months in 2013, Asian giant hornets killed 42 people and injured 1,675 more in China.

The "murder hornets" were first spotted in the state late a year ago, and entomologists have since been on alert for the massive insects, which can devastate honey bee populations.

Officials have said it's not known how they arrived in North America.

"We extract them alive", said Spichiger. Officials suspect more nests may be in the area and will keep searching.

Several more of the invasive pest not native to the United States were subsequently caught, all in the same region.

Native to Asian countries including China and Japan, it's not known how the hornets arrived in the Pacific Northwest, though through worldwide cargo is one theory.

Washington state and the Canadian province of British Columbia are the only places the hornets have been found on the continent.
