Scientists for the department have been searching for nests since the first Asian giant hornets were caught earlier this year.
In its statement Friday, the department said it discovered the nest after four live hornets were found in two separate traps on October 21 and October 22.
"Using a new type of trap, WSDA researchers tagged several captured hornets with radio trackers, which they used to lead them to the nest", CNN reported. These murder hornets usually nest in the ground, but sometimes they pick a dead tree for their home base.
The property owner has given permission for agency staff to eradicate the nest and remove the tree, if necessary.
It was first spotted in Washington in December 2019, and since then, the state's department of agriculture has been on the hunt for the invasive species.
The world's largest hornet at 2 inches (5 centimeters) long, the invasive insects can decimate entire hives of honeybees and deliver painful stings to people. Bad weather delayed plans to destroy the nest Friday. Over just three months in 2013, Asian giant hornets killed 42 people and injured 1,675 more in China.
