The Polish government imposed new restrictions on Saturday that are just short of a lockdown in hopes of bringing the country's outbreak under control.

Poland on Saturday reported 13,628 new confirmed cases and a record daily number of covid-19 deaths, 179.

While his role is largely ceremonial, the president has the power to veto laws and plays a part in formulating foreign policy.

Backed by Poland's governing nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, Duda won a second consecutive term in office in July on the back of a campaign that included promises of continued generous social spending and attacks on Poland's LGBT community.

"The president is a young man, I think that he will pass the infection without problems", Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska told private radio RMF.

He added that he expects that all people who had contact with Duda in recent days will be quarantined. This should include tennis star Iga Swiatek, he said.

Secondary and university students switched to distance learning a week ago.

All seniors over the age of 70 have been asked to stay home.

"I would like to apologize to all those who are exposed to quarantine procedures because of meeting me in recent days", he said.

Polish police in riot gear detain protesters, angry over new restrictions aimed at fighting the coronavirus pandemic, in Warsaw, Poland, Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020.

His electoral success shattered the hopes and dreams of LGBT+ people across the country, with many already reporting leaving Poland in the hope of a better life overseas.

The government is preparing to open field hospitals, but it is not clear where it will find the doctors and nurses to staff them.

Poland's national stadium is being transformed into a field hospital for Warsaw and the government is building temporary medical facilities elsewhere, as the surge in coronavirus cases strains healthcare facilities to breaking point. Check your jurisdiction's restrictions on gathering limits.
