Now A Hurricane, Zeta Is On Track To Hit Louisiana On Wednesday

New storm Zeta a hurricane threat to Mexico, US Gulf Coast

Satellite image showing Tropical Storm Zeta [NOAA/NESDIS/STAR via AP] Officials in Quintana Roo state and those at Cancun and other resorts said they were watching the storm. The earliest ever issued. A tropical storm or a low-grade hurricane still causes damages.

The video below has all the details on this wild and wacky weather.

As of 3 p.m. Zeta is about 105 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches, with local amounts of 12 inches, are possible through Tuesday along and east-northeast of Zetas track across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the Cayman Islands, and central to western Cuba.

On Sunday, a hurricane watch was called for the Yucatan Peninsula from Tulum to Rio Lagartos, including Cancun and Cozumel, while a tropical storm warning was in effect for Pinar del Rio, Cuba.

Most interestingly, Zeta is only the second named storm in history to take on that moniker.

Zeta has officially strengthened into a hurricane, and is predicted to make landfall late Monday on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula before setting its sights on the U.S. It had maximum sustained winds of around 128 km/h.

There are concerns that remaining debris from Delta could become projectiles when Zeta is expected to make landfall sometime this week.

Zeta was upgraded to a hurricane by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) this afternoon with 80 miles per hour winds while hurricane watches are now in effect from Morgan City eastward across the rest of Southeast Louisiana.

While Zeta was over open ocean Sunday, Jamaica and Honduras were getting heavy rains because the system is so large and South Florida was under a flood watch, McNoldy said.

A strong cold front will push through the Acadiana area Wednesday night pushing Zeta off to the east an ushering in handsome, cool fall weather to Acadiana later this week and lasting for the better part of the following week. Some weakening is likely while Zeta moves over the Yucatan Peninsula late tonight and early Tuesday.

"We're treating this storm as if it's going to be making landfall here so now is the ideal time to make sure your emergency kits and plans are in place", Escambia County Emergency Manager Eric Gilmore said.

When the list runs out, the storms are named after the Greek alphabet - Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epilon, Zeta...

2020's Zeta not only ties the current season with 2005 for the most number of named storms, it may also be a stepping stone into uncharted territory. So there's a non-zero chance further named storms may beckon after this year's Zeta has died down.
