US sets single-day record for COVID-19 cases during new surge

These deaths account for almost 66% of the state's total. Probable cases are investigated and handled in the same way as confirmed cases, DOH officials said.

New Zealand now has 70 active cases of coronavirus, with three other cases also recovering.

Out of the new cases, 131 - or 6.4% - are from Allegheny County. This is the second day in a row in which the health officials have announced 33 new cases, and is the fourth day in a row in which the county has seen 30 or more new cases of the virus. "Our numbers for the most recent CDC week ending on 10/17 have once again gone up, and our positivity rate for COVID-19 tests is now above 14%", county Judge Clay Jenkins said. The United States has reported over the past week an average of 60,000 new cases per day, the highest seven-day average since early August.

In a press conference Wednesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the current peak of daily COVID-19 cases is higher than what the state saw in April.

Friday's record broke one set Thursday, when ODH reported 2,425 new cases.

There have also been four further deaths associated with the virus.
