Masks could cut Covid-19 deaths in the United States by 130,000

Coronavirus cases rising in states accross the midwest

The spike to 84,218 cases, breaking the record of 77,299 set on July 16, comes as University of Washington researchers forecast that the US death toll from COVID-19 could reach a total of 500,000 by February.

These findings come as the US struggles with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

At least 83,948 new cases were reported on Friday due to outbreaks in virtually every part of the country, according to a Reuters tally.

The number of COVID-19 patients in US hospitals hit 40,000 for the first time since August on Wednesday, according to a Reuters tally, as the nation battles a surge in infections led by Midwest states.

On Friday, the US recorded 69,478 new cases, the highest single-day total since July 24 and the fifth-highest single-day total since the start of the pandemic.

There are now almost 41,000 hospitalised coronavirus patients across the country, up 34 per cent from 1 October, according to a Reuters analysis.

IHME's Director, Chris Murray, said during a media conference: "We think the key point here is that there's a huge winter surge coming and our models have been showing that for many months".

When asked about a claim made by President Donald Trump during Thursday night's presidential debate that the United States is "rounding out" the pandemic, Azar told CNN that Trump was trying to give hope to Americans waiting for a vaccine. Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Utah all reported their biggest daily increase in cases since the pandemic started.

In Tennessee, hospitals in Nashville said they have experienced a 40% increase in patients admitted for COVID-19.

Dr. Jeff Pothof, an emergency physician at the University of Wisconsin Health at Madison, expressed concern about the lack of compliance with public health measures in the state, where some groups challenged Democratic Governor Tony Evers' COVID-19 restrictions in court to have.

The Midwest has been the epicenter of the latest surge but infections are rising nationwide.

However, under the assumption that the states will close when the daily death rate per 1 million population exceeds 8 deaths, but the wearing of the mask does not change, the study's sample projections predict that the death toll could reach 511,373 by February 28th.

The findings, published Friday in the journal Nature Medicine, found even if 85 percent mask use was achieved and current social distance policies remained in effect, it could result in an additional 95,000 lives being saved.
