City in China claims no new COVID-19 cases after testing millions

On Sept. 24, Qingdao reported that two dock workers tested positive for the coronavirus during a routine health check, but neither showed any symptoms.

The port city in eastern Shandong province has reported 13 recent infections, a lot of them linked to the Qingdao Chest Hospital where infected travellers arriving from overseas had been treated in an isolation area.

Deputy Mayor Luan Xin said more than 9.9 million samples had been collected and 7.6 million results returned, adding that no new cases had been found. No new coronavirus cases were reported from such tests in the city.

All 13 cases were traced back to a Qingdao hospital, municipal authorities said Friday.

He said no community transmission has occurred.

The Qingdao cluster has created nationwide concern as thousands visited the tourist city during the recent National Day holidays.

What's more: The local government also said it will conclude a citywide virus testing on all of its more than 10 million residents by 6 p.m. Friday.

Some 34 hotels have been opened for medical observation for people who entered the capital after September 3, when the city resumed some global flights.

On Thursday morning, the city reported one new confirmed COVID-19 case.

Chinese hospitals are now treating 253 people for COVID-19, with another 381 people being monitored in isolation for having testing positive for the virus without showing symptoms or for being suspected cases. Both of them were asymptomatic, the official said.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in mainland China stands at 85,622, with 4,634 deaths, while 80,759 patients had been discharged after recovery.
