Gary Lineker responds to Liverpool FC's 2-2 draw at Everton

Everton's Dominic Calvert Lewin scoring the equaliser against Liverpool

Allowing Everton to score a late equaliser will be a massive source of frustration, which is only compounded by Henderson's late goal being ruled out.

Liverpool suffered a blow eight minutes later when defender Van Dijk went down and had to be substituted after a reckless challenge from Everton keeper Jordan Pickford.

Henderson snapped afterwards: "It must be offside because the VAR that everyone wants said it was offside".

Liverpool's brilliant start was exactly what they would have wanted on such a big occasion - especially after the 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa before the worldwide break.

Everton did finish the game down to 10 men as Richarlison was shown a straight red card for another unsafe lunge, this time on Thiago Alcantara.

Klopp's team has, however, conceded 13 goals after just five games of their title defense.

It raises questions about a law that allows players to make rash, risky challenges as long as the whistle has already been blown, and Liverpool had further reason to feel aggrieved as Van Dijk was forced to limp off with an injury.

But it was Liverpool who remained the more risky side for the remainder of the first-half.

This game looked to be there for the taking for either side, but both teams came out in the second half looking nervous and tentative.

This is because Liverpool are the best side they have played this term but Everton also showed grit when in the past they may have collapsed.

Everton's Brazilian forward Richarlison was sent off in the 90th minute after a wild challenge on Thiago Alcantara.

Liverpool FC took the lead in the third minute at Goodison Park when Sadio Mane fired Andy Robertson's low cross into the roof of the net.

Goal! What a crisp strike from Mohamed Salah!

Jordan Henderson thought he had secured the three points with a late victor, but it was ruled out for offside. From a corner the ball found Virgil van Dijk at the back post as Jordan Pickford lunged towards him and caught him around his knee.

However, the drama did not end there as VAR deemed Mane to be offside as he provided the cross.

It was a fitting end to a tight and, at times, controversial Merseyside derby.
