Elderly man, who was placed alive in a freezer in Salem, dies

'Dead' man, 74, placed in a freezer by his Indian family is rescued after 20 hours

An elderly man, who was recently kept in a freezer box while he was still alive, by his relatives, died during the early hours of Friday.

An Indian man rescued from a freezer after being mistakenly declared dead has now died.

Upon being questioned at the time when Balasubramaniakumar was rescued alive from the freezer, his brother Saravanan had said that his brother's soul was yet to leave his body.

A doctor at a private hospital reportedly declared the 74-year-old dead on Monday (12 October) and the family placed his body inside a freezer box so it could be kept for the performance of the last rites.

Kumar was later admitted to hospital in a drowsy condition and later died of lung failure, according to Dr Balajinathan, the dean of the government hospital in Salem, Tamil Nadu. According to sources, the doctor issued a death certificate and asked to take the patient back home.

After he was pronounced dead on Monday, his family took his body home and called a local undertaker to send a freezer box. Police have booked family members of the deceased for negligence and endangering life.

Police were called and are now investigating the family for not carrying out a proper medical check before declaring Mr Kumar dead.
